Spring Forward: 5 Leadership Dashboard Checks for a Healthy Year Ahead

April 2, 2025

Spring has a way of waking us up. The days get longer, the light a little brighter, and something in the air stirs us to pause, take stock, and lean into what’s next. It’s the perfect season for leaders to step back and evaluate—not just what’s getting done, but how we’re doing and where we’re heading.

When I was a young driver, I habitually ignored the dashboard lights in my car. “Check engine”? It seemed optional. That is, until the engine clanked, stalled—or, in one unfortunate case, seized entirely. Eventually, I learned the value of paying attention early. The same principle applies to leadership. Ignoring the minor signs of dysfunction or disconnection in our teams can lead to bigger issues.

This season is great for a few essential “dashboard checks.” Here are five areas I encourage every leader to reflect on:

1. Alignment Check

Is our mission still driving our strategy?

When did you last sit with your team and discuss the why behind the work? Sometimes friction in our teams is less about people and more about priorities that have drifted out of sync. Spring is a great time to ask:

  • What’s slowing us down?
  • Where do we need to realign?

2. Capacity Check

What do I need to let go of to grow?

We don’t always notice how much we carry until we stop and take inventory. As leaders, we often hold onto too much for too long—responsibilities, habits, even expectations. Ask yourself:

  • What do I need to release this season?
  • Where does my team need space to develop and stretch?

3. Time Check

Am I spending my time on what matters most?

Time is one of the clearest indicators of our values. A full calendar isn’t always a faithful one. Let this be a moment to reflect:

  • Where is my time going?
  • Does it reflect what (and who) I care about most?

4. Consistency Check

Am I living out the values I hope to see in others?

The example we set shapes the culture we lead. You don’t need to be perfect, but you do need to be present and consistent. Small daily choices have a long-term impact. Consider:

  • Where am I showing up well?
  • What slight shift could make a big difference?

5. Team Check

Do we have the right people in the right roles?

Every team needs regular care and attention, just like a garden. Sometimes that means celebrating new growth, and other times it means tending to areas where things aren’t growing. Ask:

  • Who’s thriving?
  • Who might need support?
  • Are we positioned well for the season ahead?

Leadership isn’t just about direction; it’s about stewardship. It’s about paying attention, making space for reflection, and tending to what God has entrusted us with.

So, wherever this spring finds you—whether refreshed or weary, excited or uncertain, I hope you’ll take time to check in. With yourself. With your team. With the One who called you to this work.

We’re praying for you and cheering you on.
