Steve Oakley is an attorney with more than 22 years of experience in domestic and global legal, risk management, compliance and governance issues.

A graduate of the University of Illinois, Steve has a Juris Doctor from the John Marshall Law School, a Master of Ministry from Moody Theological Seminary and a certificate in International Human Rights Law from Oxford University. Steve is admitted to practice law in Illinois, Wisconsin, North Carolina and Colorado.

Steve practiced in commercial litigation for the first half of his career, before transitioning into commercial transactions for the remainder of his years in private practice. Upon graduating from Moody Seminary, Steve left the private practice of law to serve as Vice President and General Counsel of Moody Bible Institute. Thereafter, Steve joined Compassion International in 2011 as Compassion’s first and at that time only attorney. Over the next seven years, Steve created a global legal function consisting of six attorneys on three continents, consolidating four departments and 85 employees into a single compliance function and creating a network of outside counsel in over thirty countries around the world. Steve has had led successful litigation efforts in the Bangladesh Supreme Court and the Indian High Court, as well as testifying before the United States House of Representatives, Foreign Affairs Committee.

Having traveled extensively in the under-resourced world, Steve has a deep appreciation for the challenges of operating in an increasingly complex global environment. Whether experiencing foreign jurisdiction litigation, or working to manage risk and implement governance, Steve is a relentless problem-solver that enjoys a challenge. Currently Steve is consulting with international NGOs and serving as a board member for several nonprofit organizations.
