Since its founding in 1698 West Newbury Congregational Church has been a central institution shaping both spiritual practices and community interactions in West Newbury, Massachusetts. When Newbury’s population moved across the Artichoke River to develop new western territories, they established the Second Church of Newbury because they needed a conveniently located place of worship. Samuel Belcher was its inaugural pastor
Even though many changes occurred within the church structure the institution remained a steady and dedicated servant to its community. West Newbury achieved town status in 1820 while establishing its church as a key element of its local identity. Since its inception the church has remained dedicated to its mission of honoring God and cultivating devoted followers of Jesus Christ.
The church consistently works to adjust its services to meet the changing needs of its congregation and community. The West Newbury Congregational Church stands today as a symbol of more than three hundred years of religious dedication while maintaining its historical roots and future aspirations.
We all want lives full of meaning, purpose, and joy but often experience far less. More and more of us are anxious, alone, or depressed but cloak reality with virtual experience. Our lives can look good on the outside, while behind closed doors we lack connection to God and to each other. Life is not as we imagined it would be and for some the future looks bleak, even hopeless.
We have a different vision for our future…a vision of rebirth.
Our vision is one of hope and life at its best! We want our church to be a wellspring — for thriving children, joy filled marriages, young people fully alive, and vibrant community across generations. We take seriously the call to love our neighbors as ourselves, and seek to do so humbly and wholeheartedly. The fulfillment of this vision ultimately depends on Jesus. We trust that He will make us like Him, so that we can embody an authentic love of God that leads us to serve others.
