One Church

Student Pastor

Murfreesboro, Tennessee

Why I Love This Opportunity

Brian Aaby

Senior Associate

The word OPPORTUNITY cannot be emphasized enough here. The students are hungry. The leaders are asking for more, and the parents of students are chomping at the bit… this role oozes opportunity. The low-hanging fruit is right there. Schools are within a very short drive. Students longing to be engaged. Ballfields, gymnasiums, and technology are all at your fingertips.
There is a solid foundation to build upon, and you’d be joining a team that will immediately look to partner with you. The staff at One Church is committed to each other and can’t wait to see YOU succeed.

About This Organization

In the 1990s, Murfreesboro’s rapid growth prompted Dr. Mark Gregory to found Calvary Baptist to reach the expanding community with the gospel. Initially meeting at Middle Tennessee State University on March 1, 2000, the congregation relocated multiple times before purchasing 40 acres in north Murfreesboro and settling at 431 Dejarnette Lane in 2004.

Dr. Gregory led the church with a strong emphasis on the Word of God for 19 years. In 2019, he transitioned to a teaching role at a Bible college, and Pastor Steve Willis became the second pastor in early 2020. Despite starting during the COVID-19 crisis, Pastor Steve increased attendance from 200 to over 700 by 2022.

Now renamed One Church, it has grown to about 1,400 weekly attendees across two campuses, with 1,100-1,200 at the Murfreesboro campus. The church emphasizes worship, service, and connection, ensuring members participate in weekly worship, ministry, and small groups.

One Church plans to plant more congregations around Murfreesboro instead of becoming a mega-church. These new campuses will be part of a unified network under the leadership of one group of elders and pastors led by Senior Pastor Steve Willis.

  • Schedule and Organize Activities: Plan and schedule ministry activities on Wednesday evenings and other appropriate times, including retreats, mission trips, and other off-campus events.
  • Leadership and Supervision: Lead or supervise adult volunteers and student ministry interns, emphasizing the development of a student-led leadership team.
  • Youth Ministry Oversight: Oversee the ministry for youth in grades 6 through 12, coordinating with local schools and Christian organizations to mentor and counsel youth, and participate in school events as needed.
  • Recruitment and Training: Recruit, train, and equip individuals for newly formed congregational plants and develop disciple-makers to reach Rutherford County.- Pastoral Leadership and Administration: Provide pastoral leadership and care, work closely with the Director of Connect Groups, oversee budget and expenditures, and coach ministry leaders to develop a leadership culture within the OC philosophy.

What a Strong Candidate Would Look Like:

  • Passionate Pursuit of Jesus: Has a continually growing relationship with Jesus and a passion for helping people grow closer to Jesus.
  • Student Ministry Experience: Experienced Student Pastor (likely 3+ years) who can give strategic vision and direction to a solid core of 70+ students who are ready to grow and reach others!
