About This Organization

Founded in 1904, Star Gospel Mission is Charleston’s oldest faith‐based outreach, and today, it continues to extend a hand up through Christ’s love to people struggling with economic, emotional, spiritual, and physical hardships.

They provide housing options for men facing homelessness and strive to prove that a man’s worst moment is not the sum of his life. They provide transitional housing options, counseling, and other services to equip their guests to become productive, interdependent members of the Charleston community.

Most importantly, they offer hope through the Gospel of Jesus Christ to anyone who is seeking spiritual transformation.

Position Description

Under the direction of the Mission Executive Director, the Development Officer strategically plans, implements, and oversees Star Gospel Mission’s development/fundraising function, including donor communications and cultivation, print, broadcast, campaign oversight, and special events.

Key Responsibilities:

Personal Donor Fundraising Goals and Responsibilities: (50%)
Long-Term Development and Planning Responsibilities: (50%)

The Development Officer will:

  • Work closely with Mission leadership to determine local funding needs, programs, and services offered for presentation to donors and prospective donors.
  • Raise funds to sustain and enhance Star Gospel Mission’s services in Charleston, SC.
  • Oversee the funding of the building campaign in conjunction with the Mission Executive Director.
  • Develop and nurture a growing portfolio of donors and prospective donors, including individuals, foundations, and corporations.
  • Plan and implement special events designed to increase donor engagement and build the brand of Star Gospel Mission.

  • A STRATEGIC BUILDER – the Development Officer will see relationships as an art form and can build the strategy, infrastructure, and team to support them.
  • RESOURCEFUL – a fearless, adaptable, and bold problem-solver with a working competency in organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • AN EXCELLENT COMMUNICATOR – connects naturally and relationally with people through verbal and written communication: a strong vision caster and responsive cultivator of relationships.
