St. Andrew's Church

Student Director

Mount Pleasant, South Carolina

Why I Love This Opportunity

Brian Aaby

Senior Associate

This is my second time getting to partner with St. Andrew’s! Five years ago, the situation was completely different. The church had just experienced a fire, and the student ministry was almost non-existent, yet there was great hope for their future. That hope has become a reality, and now the church and the youth ministry have great momentum. Not only do they have a new, state-of-the-art building, but they have a vibrant, critical mass for both middle school and high school. The staff is ready to welcome a new teammate to build on the momentum of what’s already happening and take the students to the next phase of their growth.

About This Organization

Anglicans began meeting in this area of Mt Pleasant by 1828 and built a chapel on the current site in 1835. The church experience slow and steady growth for over a century and a half.

In 1996, two smaller traditional services were held in the Historic Church and one contemporary service in the Ministry Center. A planned campus expansion and rebuilding slated to begin in May 2018 was revamped due to a devastating fire in the Ministry Center weeks before the project started. The rebuilding and campus expansion was completed in October 2020. The new campus includes Ridley Hall, a three-story building for equipping laypeople and training church planters and aspiring pastors.

St. Andrew’s staff continually asks, “If St. Andrew’s disappeared tomorrow, would it matter to the people of Mt Pleasant?” They seek to constantly reach the community with the Good News of Jesus Christ.

The church seeks to present to all people the good news of Jesus Christ both intellectually and experientially; they are committed to Truth; they listen to God’s Word; they feed the poor and take in the lost, and as they seek to demonstrate God’s mercy both at home and around the world.

The Student Director will oversee both the middle (grades 6-8) and high school ministry (grades 9-12) and two paid staff members who assist. Both ministries have a ministry night (Sunday and Wednesday, respectively), and the Director will work with the volunteers who are actively involved in the lives of the students during the program and outside of the program nights.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide visionary leadership for the students and volunteer leaders.
  • Be proactive in the lives of students and leaders in both the programming and non-programming elements (pursue relationships).
  • Be proficient in ministry planning and implementation (including calendar, budget, and facilities).
  • Recruiting, training, and supervising parent/young adult volunteers.
  • Be excellent at troubleshooting and resolving ministry challenges.
  • Participate on the St. Andrew’s Leadership Team.
  • Lead and develop department staff- giving direction and leadership to paid staff/interns re: personal development as ministry leaders.
  • Train and equip youth ministry volunteers to effectively care for students.
  • Continually develop personal leadership abilities and philosophy of ministry.

What a Strong Candidate Would Look Like:

  • The leader should have 5+ years of youth ministry leadership and supervisory experience, including strategic planning and budgeting.
  •  The person should have a College degree, with theological training preferred.
  • The Director should have successfully planned and led youth ministry and directed all aspects of a growing ministry for 3+ years.
  • This new Director should have experience recruiting and developing volunteers.
  • They hope this person has specialized knowledge in best ministry practices to middle and high school age young people.
