About This Organization

South Suburban Christian Church is a strong, non-judgmental church unified in its love for Christ and for others. The members and attendees, recent and long-term, would say they have come and stayed because of the loving environment that is rich in fellowship. While the church remains in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) denomination, they value their freedom in Christ as a recognized Congregation within the Disciples. They agree on essential, fundamental beliefs and practices but have a different view on some doctrinal issues.

Position Description

To serve as the spiritual leader and teacher of the congregation. To be the Chief of the Ministry Staff and work with lay leadership to establish and fulfill the purpose of congregational mission, life, and ministries. To serve beyond the local church in ecumenical affairs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a spiritual leader and teacher of the congregation by delivering sermons throughout the year and teaching Bible study and Christian maturation classes.
  • Serves the congregation through baptisms, visitation, hospital calls, counseling, weddings, and funerals.
  • Provides leadership and planning for both inwardly focused and outwardly focused ministries.
  • Serves as a full participant in the Council of Elders, Governing Board, and Executive Team.
  • Develops programs and ministry staff
  • Assists with church administrative duties

What a Strong Candidate Would Look Like:

  • 7-10 years or more in full-time ministry with an MDiv or equivalent degree as a minimum and an Ordination in a recognized denomination
  • Pastoral experience within a church of at least 300 members
  • Experience in developing staff through delegation and mentorship
  • Willingness to work together with Elder Board and Governing Board, including collaboration in Strategic Planning and implementation
  • Willingness to foster a respectful, ethical, loving, and effective working environment for staff and volunteers
