North Avenue was founded in 1898 by members wanting to create another Presbyterian church in the newly expanded city of Atlanta. The officers and members of NAPC made a strategic decision in the 1950’s, which was to remain downtown although the church was no longer a neighborhood church as it had been at its inception and members had to pass many suburban churches on their way to church each Sunday. This decision was to become involved in urban ministry, with internationals, and with the world as well as the city. Currently the church averages more than 200 in attendance on Sundays, with a budget of around $2 million.

NAPC is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). Doctrinal alignment is expected around the core tenets of Reformed theology, with a commitment to the authority of Scripture, the sovereignty of God, and the centrality of Christ.
North Avenue Presbyterian Church is governed by a Session composed of 16 ruling elders who serve in close partnership with the pastoral staff and the congregation. Our Presbyterian polity emphasizes shared, representative leadership grounded in prayerful discernment and accountability.
Elders are organized into ministry teams and committees that provide oversight and spiritual direction. Decision-making is collaborative, and the voices of staff and congregants are valued as we seek to follow the Holy Spirit’s guidance together in faithfully serving Christ’s mission.
In addition to the Senior Pastor, NAPC currently has 16 additional staff members who serve at the church in various ministry and operations capacities.
North Avenue is located in Midtown Atlanta, a thriving urban neighborhood that merges historical significance with modern energy. The area is characterized by its diverse population, vibrant arts scene, and proximity to major cultural and academic institutions like the Fox Theatre, Georgia Tech, and the High Museum of Art. The community boasts walkable streets, local eateries, and a deep commitment to social and civic engagement. Living here offers a blend of opportunity and challenge, as the city continues to grow and diversify.
The next Senior Pastor will have the opportunity help lead the church through the unique challenges of pastoring a diverse church in a changing community.
This will include:
- Managing a widely diverse church in a broader cultural environment where differing opinions and views could lead to a distraction from core mission
- Honoring and respecting the deep and rich history of the church, while also helping to adapt to changing needs and realities
- Connecting with the growing young population in walking distance to the church
