Key Responsibilities
- Vision & Leadership – Lead and align the Boulder Campus Student Ministry with the church’s vision, developing a disciple-making culture for middle and high school students while collaborating with leaders across Calvary’s campuses.
- Volunteer Development – Recruit, train, and equip a strong team of ministry volunteers, providing ongoing support and development through the Leadership Pipeline.
- Programs & Discipleship – Plan and implement weekly gatherings, small groups, trips, and events that help students grow in their faith and embrace a disciple-making lifestyle.
- Student & Family Connections – Build relationships with students and families, providing pastoral care, clear communication, and an intentional process for welcoming and integrating new students.
- Teaching & Biblical Engagement – Develop and implement a solid biblical teaching plan, oversee communication of God’s truth, and train others to teach effectively.
- Stewardship & Administration – Manage the ministry budget, oversee facilities and equipment, and coordinate shared events with other Calvary campuses
Challenges and Opportunities
- Step Into a Healthy, Thriving Ministry – This isn’t a rebuild—it’s an opportunity to build on an already strong ministry with a great core of students and volunteers. The new leader will get to step in, build relationships, and continue shaping the future of student ministry at Calvary.
- Build Trust Before Making Changes – The outgoing Student Pastor was well-loved, so the new leader will need to focus on relationships first. Jumping in, getting to know students, leaders, and parents, and earning trust will be key before making any major changes.
- Develop & Expand Leadership – There’s a solid team of volunteers, but there’s also room to bring in new key leaders and develop high schoolers to take on more responsibility in mentoring middle school students. A strong leader will equip and empower others to lead well.
- Create a Stronger Sense of Community – Since Boulder students come from multiple schools, their main connection point is student ministry. The new leader will need to be intentional about building relationships and creating a culture where students feel known, connected, and invested.
- Thrive in a Collaborative Environment – Calvary values teamwork across campuses, so the right leader will embrace collaboration, contribute to a shared vision, and enjoy being part of something bigger than just one campus.
- Make Disciples & Develop Leaders – At its core, this role is about helping students grow in their faith and empowering them to lead. The high schoolers are eager to step up—this is a great opportunity to equip and release them to invest in others.
Leadership and Governance
- Calvary Bible Church is led by a strong team of pastors, elders, and staff who are committed to equipping the church for ministry. The new Director of Student Ministries will report directly to Perry Marshall, the Boulder Campus Pastor, and will be part of a collaborative staff culture that values leadership development and teamwork.
- Senior Pastor Tom Shirk has faithfully led Calvary since 1993, bringing a deep passion for preaching and teaching the redeeming grace of the gospel. His life was transformed at 20 years old while hearing a sermon on Galatians 6:14, which set the course for his ministry. Tom loves opening God’s Word and pointing people toward faith, worship, and wholehearted devotion to Jesus. He has been married to his wife, Lucy, since 1981, and together they have three adult children and a son-in-law.
- As a part of the Evangelical Free Church of America (EFCA), Calvary operates with a congregational governance model. The congregation votes on key decisions such as the annual budget, elder elections, major financial or real estate matters, bylaw changes, and the hiring of the Senior Pastor. The church is shepherded by a team of elders—men elected by the congregation—who seek God’s will through prayer, Scripture, and discernment. They meet twice a month to provide spiritual oversight and direction.
- While the elders guide the church’s spiritual leadership, the staff leads the day-to-day ministry. Calvary’s Senior Pastor team oversees the staff, while the Strategic Operations team provides leadership for organization-wide decisions. The staff is empowered to lead, free from unnecessary oversight, with a clear focus on equipping and mobilizing volunteers to do the work of ministry.
