First (Scots) Presbyterian Church is a historic congregation rooted in the Reformed tradition and centered on worship, education, mission, and fellowship. Organized in 1731, the church honors its nearly 300 year history while actively seeking to serve the present generation and shape the future through faithful ministry.
The congregation values worship centered on Scripture, Christian education, mission and service, fellowship and belonging, and a spirit of mutual respect and Christian community. First (Scots) seeks to help people worship God, grow in faith, serve others, and live as part of a meaningful church family in the heart of Charleston.
- The staff culture at First (Scots) reflects the character of a historic, single campus church with deep congregational roots and a strong sense of shared ministry. Staff members work together to support worship, discipleship, fellowship, mission, and pastoral care across the life of the church.
- The next Director or Pastor of Young Adults will need to be a collaborative team member who can partner well with pastors, staff, lay leaders, volunteers, and the broader congregation. This is a visible relational role, so the right person will bring warmth, flexibility, strong communication, and a willingness to participate in evening and weekend ministry rhythms.
- Build authentic Christian community through regular gatherings, small groups, social events, and fellowship opportunities
- Lead discipleship and faith formation through Bible studies, retreats, worship gatherings, service opportunities, and spiritual mentoring
- Help young adults become more fully integrated into the broader life of First (Scots), including worship, service, leadership, and intergenerational relationships
- Develop outreach strategies to connect with young adults in Charleston, especially those who are new to the city or not currently connected to a church
- Recruit, train, and encourage volunteers who can help support and expand the ministry
- Communicate clearly and consistently through digital platforms, social media, email, and other tools that help young adults stay connected
- Steward the ministry budget, develop healthy ministry systems, and collaborate with church staff to support long term growth.
The ideal candidate will have a mature and growing faith in Jesus Christ and an appreciation for Reformed theology, Presbyterian ministry, and the mission of the local church. A bachelor’s degree and two to three years of relevant ministry experience are preferred.
Strong candidates will bring experience in college, young adult, discipleship, or adjacent life stage ministry. They should be gifted in building relationships, planning gatherings, developing leaders, and creating ministry structure where little currently exists. The strongest candidates will be pastoral, organized, relationally engaging, digitally fluent, and comfortable serving in a role that requires both spiritual depth and startup style leadership.
