First Baptist Simpsonville/Upstate Church

Director of Communications and Cultural Engagement

Simpsonville,
South Carolina
Upstate Church is seeking a strategic and Spirit-led leader to serve as its first Director of Communications and Cultural Engagement, a unique role that merges bold Gospel truth with relevant, redemptive messaging. This person will help shape and steward the voice of Upstate Church both internally across nine locations and externally in a post-Christian culture that’s hungry for clarity, authenticity, and hope. More than a content curator, this leader will be a messaging architect, creating space for real conversations that engage real people with Grace and Truth. This is an incredible opportunity to join one of the fastest-growing churches in the country, one that is actively shifting from an informational communications model to a transformative engagement strategy. This leader will lead a team to create platforms that elevate the church’s presence in the public square: podcasts, vlogs, livestreams, reels, events, and more. They will spotlight honest, gritty conversations that bring the lead and teaching pastors’ voices into the culture with conviction and grace. At the same time, they’ll build upon an already solid internal system to ensure all campuses communicate as one unified church on mission. This is a rare opportunity for a courageous leader to help people in Upstate South Carolina see Jesus more clearly in a noisy world and be compelled to follow Him.

Why I Love This Opportunity

There’s a refreshing honesty and urgency about the team at Upstate Church. They aren’t looking for someone to manage communications. They’re looking for someone to build platforms that amplify a trusted voice in a noisy world. This is a church with a clear, urgent message – the truth of Jesus – and they need a capable leader who knows how to steward that voice with excellence, authenticity, and strategic insight. If you’ve helped a leader or organization, find cultural relevance and stay true to its message through modern media, this role will feel like a meaningful extension of your calling. You’ll be trusted to shape and scale … all while being deeply rooted in a local church that loves its people and the place it’s called to reach.

Janie Mehaffey

Associate

A great match for this position would be:

  • A culture-shaping leader: You see communication as a redemptive force … an opportunity to have Gospel conversations in places where people are curious and seeking purpose.
  • A builder of platforms that reach beyond the church: You’ve developed initiatives like podcasts, vlogs, livestreams, short-form reels, and storytelling series that connect with people far from faith.
  • A communicator who understands the cultural moment and the people who Upstate Church is called to reach: You instinctively understand how to speak to everyday people, especially those who may be skeptical of institutions, who may hold conservative values but feel disconnected from the church.
  • A diplomatic listener and synthesizer: You engage people, inside and outside the church, with curiosity and empathy, turning diverse perspectives into unifying and impactful messaging.
  • Someone who thrives in dynamic, fast-paced environments: You bring stability and clarity to complexity without losing agility or innovation.
