Mission, Vision, and Values
Mission:
First Baptist Matthews exists to glorify God and make disciples by helping every generation take their next step with Jesus.
- A Gospel outpost: A church deeply rooted in truth, burdened for the lost, and positioned to be a light in a growing community rather than just a landmark in it.
- Bible people: Expository, Christ-centered preaching matters here, and worship is expected to be theologically sound.
- On mission where God has placed us: The 10:02 Card initiative has members praying daily for three people far from God.
- Every generation: From kids to senior adults, the aim is helping people take their next step with Jesus. Every ministry, including worship, exists for that.
Staff Culture
- Collaborative by design: The Worship Pastor will be one of the Senior Pastor’s closest ministry partners. Preaching and worship shape the spiritual life of the church together, so this role means collaborating on sermon series, service planning, and creative direction rather than planning music independently.
- A team being rebuilt on purpose: Staff culture is moving from siloed toward collaborative, and this season is about camaraderie, talking across tables, and jumping in to help one another.
- Excellence is our standard: Not performance, but doing what we do well because of who we do it for.
- Serving is our calling: Nothing is below anyone’s job title.
- Encouragers who raise the bar: The kind of teammate whose own standard makes everyone around them better.
- A place you enjoy coming to work: Unity, alignment, and a good bit of fun.

Worship Philosophy
Our worship gatherings exist to exalt Jesus Christ, proclaim the Gospel, form disciples, and unite the Body of Christ in praise. We believe worship is not a performance to attend, but an opportunity to pursue the presence of God together. We want gatherings where people are actually engaged, not just watching.
- Songs matter theologically. We care about Gospel clarity and biblically sound lyrics, and we care just as much about whether our people know the songs well enough to sing them. A great song nobody knows does not do much for a room.
- Every service tells one story. Songs, Scripture, prayer, transitions, and preaching should work together to point people to Jesus, not sit next to each other as disconnected elements.
- We are not a choir-only church or a band-only church. We want both, working together rather than competing on a Sunday.
- We value our choir of 30 to 40. It is a beautiful picture of generations worshiping together, and we want it fully woven into congregational worship rather than set apart from it.
- Rooted and reaching. We want to move deliberately toward a clearer worship identity, honoring what this church has valued for a long time while leading it somewhere new. Slow and thoughtful, not an overhaul.
