After spending a couple of days with Michael Lee (Lead Pastor) and the rest of the Encounter crew, I found myself wondering how often I could come to visit! Not only is the staff good at what they do, but they are fun! I love how they are intentional in ALL that they do. They want to be disciple-makers caring for their current congregation, but they are not just intentional, but they are practical with how they are going about being good neighbors. This church is truly diverse and desires to grow in this even more. I can’t wait to see who God brings to partner with Encounter and the student ministry!
Encounter Church is an intentional multiethnic church in the greater Seattle area (Mercer Island, WA). The church is part of the Evangelical Covenant Church. The NEW Encounter Church is the merger of two churches: Encounter Church(Bellevue, WA) and Evergreen Covenant Church (Mercer Island). Encounter, formerly All Nations Community Church, was planted about 12 years ago and comprised primarily of Asian-Americans prior to the name change (prior to the pandemic) and then the eventual merger in 2023. Evergreen Covenant has been primarily a white church on Mercer Island since the 1970s. Together the new church is increasingly becoming multiethnic and multigenerational.
Its mission:
Encounter church exists to make disciples who love Jesus, live like Jesus, and lead others to Jesus!
In many ways, this is a classic “youth pastor” role, in that they aren’t looking for a pied-piper, though they do know this person will have to be approachable, the primary responsibilities within student ministry will be to really be focused on students, leaders, and parents. The expectation is to have a solid program (Sunday evening), but also to do life with and develop volunteers who are pouring into students and to come alongside and communicate well with parents as they are the primary influences in their kids’ lives.
