Worship Philosophy
Grace Pres believes worship is both expressive and formative. In worship, the people of God express praise, lament, thanksgiving, sorrow, celebration, repentance, and hope—all in the presence of God. At the same time, worship forms and shapes the congregation, cultivating spiritual sensibilities and discipling the whole person, including the emotions.
Their worship is guided by five core values:
- BIBLICAL: God acts first and foremost by His Word. Worship that honors God both responds to what God has said and tells the truth about Him, ourselves, and our world according to His Word. Biblical worship is also an aspect of mission, as the nations are invited to overhear God’s people praising Him. And Christian worship does not end with a dismissal; it ends with a benediction and a charge: “We are gathered before God’s Word and Table in order to be nourished to carry out the mission of being human” (James K.A. Smith).
- ACCESSIBLE: Worship involves congregational participation. Song choices and musical styles, as well as the language of the liturgy, should encourage this by being comprehensible and contextual. In addition, we encourage emotional engagement. Emotions are part of being human, and worship is a space to process the full range of human emotions in the presence of God.
- BEAUTIFUL: Aesthetics do matter – not only because bad art is a distraction, but also because God loves the arts. Artistic excellence should be pursued. God created the world good and beautiful and created us to image Him by making good and beautiful things. And beauty has a way of getting past our defenses.
- FLEXIBLE: There is room for variation within our liturgical framework. The “style” of music can vary based on the gifts of the musicians, the needs of the congregation, or the themes of the service.
- COHESIVE: The elements of the service (i.e. Call to Worship, Confession, etc.) work best when they cohere with the sermon and are integrated with each other. Worship both prepares us to receive and enables us to respond to God’s Word.
Theological Expectations
- Grace is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). They would say they are Christian first, PCA/Reformed second.
- While male-only eldership is practiced, women serve in key leadership roles across the church. They view men and women as co-laborers in multiple layers of leadership roles).
- Theologically, Grace is Reformed but not rigid holding to historic Christian convictions while remaining warm and hospitable to those still exploring the faith.
