Community Bible Study (CBS) has touched the lives of millions of people all over the world through in-depth study of God’s word. In the past few years, CBS has pivoted significantly and is more committed than ever to the mission “to make disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ in our communities through caring, in-depth Bible study, available to all.” The leadership at CBS is deeply committed to prayer and to the application of God’s word. As CBS looks toward the future, the organization is moving toward broader expansion globally and looking toward the Next Generations to come.
Community Bible Study began in Bethesda, Maryland, in 1975. Homemakers began a ladies’ Bible study. Rapid growth spun off more groups in nearby areas. Soon, the young ministry, Community Bible Study, expanded into other cities, states, and even nations. As classes expanded, the preparation and administration methods became increasingly sophisticated, never losing the ministry’s deep dependence on prayer. The ministry’s mission and motto was “making disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ in our communities through caring, in-depth Bible study, available to all.” And this mission has not changed. “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20). That’s just what Community Bible Study has been doing for nearly 50 years.
