Position Description

Provide strategic and pastoral leadership for the LifeGroup ministry, fostering discipleship, community, and spiritual formation across Church of the Valley.

Recruit, equip, and care for group leaders to ensure healthy, multiplying small groups that align with the church’s gospel-centered mission.

Partner with church leadership to develop outreach and discipleship strategies that reflect the unique needs of a post-Christian, culturally diverse context.

Contribute to the overall shepherding of the church through teaching, pastoral care, and ministry collaboration under the direction of the Lead Pastor.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and Develop the Life Group Ministry: Oversee all aspects of the church’s small group strategy, including recruitment, vision casting, structure, and alignment with the church’s mission.
  • Equip and Support Group Leaders: Train, coach, and encourage Life Group leaders and coaches to foster spiritual growth, relational connection, and care within their groups.
  • Enhance Discipleship Pathways: Strengthen systems for spiritual formation through sermon-based groups, topical studies, and discipleship entry points like Rooted.
  • Foster Relational Community: Cultivate a culture of biblical community by helping people connect meaningfully in groups that encourage fellowship, service, and care.
  • Champion Outreach and Mission: Help groups engage missionally by serving in the community and inviting spiritual seekers into gospel-centered environments.
  • Collaborate: Work closely with the Lead Pastor and Executive Pastor to align groups with overall church vision and shepherd the congregation effectively.
  • Provide Pastoral Care: Share in responsibilities such as counseling, prayer, hospital visits, weddings, funerals, and general congregational support.
  • Plan and Oversee Events and Initiatives: Organize church-wide group launches, training events, and outreach projects to support ministry growth and engagement.

 

What a Strong Candidate Would Look Like:

  • Relational Leadership and Team Development: Proven ability to build, support, and multiply healthy teams of group leaders through encouragement, equipping, and ongoing care.
  • Biblical and Theological Maturity: Sound doctrine and spiritual depth rooted in Scripture, with the ability to teach effectively in both group and leadership development settings.
  • Cultural and Missional Adaptability: Emotional intelligence and humility to thrive in New England’s post-Christian, spiritually curious context—balancing truth with relational grace.
  • Strategic and Systems-Oriented Thinking: Capable of assessing the current ministry landscape and implementing sustainable structures to expand group participation and leader training.
  • Gospel-Driven Ministry Philosophy: Passionate about discipleship, spiritual formation, and building authentic community aligned with the five biblical purposes of the church.
  • Self-Starter with a Learner’s Posture: Personally motivated, growth-minded, and comfortable working independently while embracing collaboration and accountability within the team.
