Location

When the sun comes out, we all say to each other:  “What a beautiful day!”  Leaving Tacoma (“Grit City”) and crossing over the Narrows Bridge (“Galloping Gertie”) into Gig Harbor is a journey to a quieter place.  Roads curve like tunnels through towering Douglas Fir trees, opening up to small farms, salty coastlines, small islands, parks and sports fields.  The Olympic Mountains rise to the northwest, and Mt. Rainier stands tall over the southeast.  We have our Costco and Target and Fred Meyer.  Most of our life may be lived on this side of the bridge.  Families settle here; many pilots, many firefighters, many medical personnel, many work-from-homers.  High schoolers who leave for college return years later to plant their new families.

The liberal and progressive forces for which our state is known dominate the cities of Seattle and downtown Tacoma–but their grip is less powerful in Gig Harbor and the rural communities of Washington.  Yes, the harvest is plentiful and we need workers.  At the same time there are strong families with generations of Christians.  There are families where children have never been to church living alongside families that exhibit cultural Christianity.

We are a wealthy community-though certainly not as wealthy as the Bellevue, Redmond, and Mercer Island communities built up by corporations like Microsoft and Amazon.  A pastor who is neither enticed nor intimidated by wealth will do well.  It’s a wealthy and educated mission field.

Many Christian families live out their faith and work out their salvation in a constant struggle to balance their family schedules–with school, sports, Young Life, Youth Group, lessons, and hobbies.

When it rains softly and the clouds rest over us like a blanket, we make progress indoors on our to-do lists.  We meet for coffee and build relationship.  We make plans, rain-or-shine, raincoats at the ready.  And when the mountain is out, and the sun shines, we say, “What a beautiful day!”
