Highlands Community Church

Executive Pastor of Ministries

Renton,

Washington

Why I Love This Opportunity

Ernest Smith

Associate

I love this opportunity for a few reasons. First, Highlands is in a position of growth and health. This person is stepping into a staff and church culture that has learned what it takes to be healthy and to protect that health. Second, it’s perfect for someone who wants to continue developing their leadership capabilities while leading a hungry and enthusiastic staff.

About This Organization

Highlands was planted in 1946 with a mission to reach the young families who had moved into the Renton Highlands during WWII. From the beginning, Highlands was founded with a missionary heart to love people and spread the gospel. Before the founding pastor was paid full-time by the church, they had already sent and were supporting a full-time missionary to Africa.

From 1946 until 2018, Highlands had only two pastors. The founding pastor stayed for 40+ years, and his successor stayed for 30+ years. During this time, the church grew from a small group of families to over 2,000 people on two campuses. Highlands was known as the “family Bible church,” and emphasis on children’s and student ministries, as well as global missions, has always been central to the church’s DNA.

Nate Edmondson has been the Lead Pastor since August 2021 and has been leading the church into a new season. After a few years spent working through difficult staffing changes and rebuilding trust, the church is growing and dreaming for the future of what God has for Highlands.
