McLean Bible Church

Executive Director of Ministries & Operations

Why I Love This Opportunity

Cory Thurman

McLean Bible Church is looking for a senior-level leader to come alongside their Co-Pastor model to join in their mission of glorifying God by making disciples and multiplying churches among all nations beginning in Greater Washington, D.C.

I love this church and this opportunity. I personally served at MBC for 10+ years and find it a great joy to help them find this role. I can express firsthand the impact and opportunity MBC has had and will continue to have on thousands.

About This Organization

MBC began as a small Bible church in Northern Virginia in 1961, eventually growing to a few hundred people.  When Lon Solomon became our senior pastor in 1980, he shifted the church’s approach to more of an evangelistic “seeker-focused” model like Willow Creek in Chicago.  The church then saw tremendous numerical growth throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, culminating in regular attendance of 10,000 people each weekend, well-known radio spots for Pastor Lon throughout the DMV, and an expansive new facility just off Route 7 near Tysons, Virginia.  Four additional MBC locations were also launched in Virginia and Maryland, each continuing to meet today.

When Pastor Lon’s retirement was formally announced in 2016, the church asked David Platt to join the MBC team as a visiting teaching pastor while he continued leading the International Mission Board. Later, in 2017, Lon and the elders unanimously proposed—and the church affirmed with more than 95% support—calling David Platt the new lead pastor of MBC. David accepted the new leadership role, and he and his growing family moved to Northern Virginia that same year.

  Most recently, in the fall of 2023, Pastor David asked Mike Kelsey to join him as a lead pastor at MBC, and our church overwhelmingly affirmed Pastor Mike as well.  In his new role, Mike Kelsey provides primary day-to-day leadership for our church, which has freed David to focus more and more on leading our church to help reach the unreached in the most difficult places around the world.

As we continue to emerge from uncertainty and see the beginnings of a new season of growth and impact emerging, we now regularly get to share updates like these with great joy:

  • On Easter Sunday, more than 10,000 attended one of our locations in person across the DMV;
  • Over the past three years alone, more than 1,200 people have joined our church as members, including an additional 150 new members in March 2024;
  • Our lead team and location pastors remain committed to the mission here and have experienced zero turnover over the past five years (other than internal promotions);
  • We have been conservative with our finances during recent years, with zero church debt and more than $15M in current reserves for strategic initiatives for our church family and
  • New elders and church constitutional amendments and other foundational aspects of our church’s life continue to be affirmed by our members at roughly 90% each time.

Alongside these very encouraging updates, Pastor Mike has also recently begun casting vision for a brand new and exciting season at MBC.  Lord willing, the Executive Director role, which we are prayerfully considering now, will be a key part of serving alongside Pastor Mike and Pastor David to help our church prepare for and pursue this exciting vision for our church in the days ahead.
