|Why We Love This Opportunity|
Ashburn Baptist Church is an established church with fresh leadership poised for a resurgence of effectiveness in the south Chicago area. Because there are virtually no church planting efforts in the south part of Chicago, the church has partnered with church planting organizations to strategize about reaching this area of the city. In the coming years, they plan to plant additional churches and campuses around the south Chicago region for the purpose of engaging more of this area with the Gospel. What an incredible opportunity to get in on the front end of this exciting season!
|Since the 1950s, Ashburn Baptist Church has been established in the south Chicago area for the purpose of helping people find new life in Jesus. The church is known in their community for its long-standing faithfulness in the area and among Believers in the area for its solid Biblical teaching. Ashburn Baptist was founded by Vernon C. Lyons who pastored the church for 68 years before engaging in a planned succession and passing the responsibilities of Lead Pastor to Tommy Thompson, in late 2018. As a church in two locations, average adult attendance on their main campus in Orland Park is around 350, while their Chicago campus averages about 250 between their English speaking and Spanish speaking services.
The worship gatherings on the Orland Park campus are multi-generational featuring current, modern worship songs while also incorporating songs and elements that help to engage all generations making this a truly blended worship culture. On occasion, a choir and small orchestra are utilized to supplement their modern band/rhythm section. A desire exists here to continue pressing into more progressive styles while remaining multi-generational in appeal.
Since the new senior pastor has come, the worship ministry at Ashburn has been transitioning from a formal, liturgical format toward a more modern, progressive approach to musical style. Currently, they are singing modern worship songs and modern hymn arrangements. The worship team and the congregation are eager for continued change toward this more progressive direction. On most weekends, instrumentation in the services includes piano, bass, drums, acoustic and electric guitars, organ and keys (pads) along with 3-5 vocalists.
A Worship Pastor is desired who can lead Ashburn toward increased freedom and authentic expressions of worship. They also want to continue “raising the bar” of excellence in musical execution. The new leader should have the musical expertise to challenge the team and the organizational ability to create a structure that prepares them well each week. The Worship Pastor will oversee all aspects of the worship culture, including the media teams. The new leader should possess a pioneering spirit that sees the tremendous potential for the future that exists here. Ashburn is poised to reinvent itself and have a renewed impact. The new Lead Pastor is leading them there and the Worship Pastor will be a critical part of this journey.
