Evergreen is a community with a family atmosphere. It is a place where congregation members gather during the week, not just the weekend, and long-lasting friendships are made. It has broad participation in small groups, adult Sunday school classes across a wide variety of topics, long-standing and well-attended retreats. Attendees recognize ‘congregational care’ as one of Evergreen’s biggest strengths. The church has many years of tradition and a solid congregational base which provides resilience and flexibility even during tumultuous seasons.
At the same time, Evergreen is in a season where the congregation recognizes how easy it can be to stagnate if it keeps doing things “the way they’ve always been done.” The people of Evergreen are hungry to learn and grow and serve their community. A recent congregational survey revealed that Evergreen’s biggest areas to improve are intentional discipleship opportunities and effective community outreach and engagement. Evergreen wants to see the men, women, and children on Mercer Island, Seattle, Bellevue, and surrounding communities transformed into disciples and voices for Jesus Christ. The congregation is hungry to grow in size and influence in the community but needs vision and direction. Further, the staff and leadership team are determined to grow Evergreen deeper and wider but realize they must be flexible and evolve when it comes to the approach.
