El Porvinir Christian Camp is all about being a Christ-led community that partners with event leaders and positions them to change lives in a summer camp or weekend retreat context. Located on 480 acres in the Northern New Mexico mountains, El Porvinir Christian Camp will see approximately 3,000 guests annually with the majority being summer church campers. The ministry has a rich history of meeting needs year-round for churches and groups from the pan handle Texas to Colorado. The camp is primarily a hosting ministry which tries to understand the unique goals of each group that uses its facilities.
For over 60 years El Porvenir Christian Camp and Retreat Center has been a place of refuge where campers can escape and refocus on what really is true about themselves, God, and others. This place is about providing guests something that is hard to come by these days: Uninterrupted Focused Time Away. At the end of a fifteen-mile road that features hair pin turns and continuous switchbacks, one really gets the sense that they are “away from it all” once on the property.
“For generations people have made life-changing decisions at camp,” says Executive Director, Nate Stafford. “In fact, this is what keeps most of our staff coming back year after year – they’ve personally benefited from EPCC.”
El Porvinir Christian Camp (EPCC) has 200 beds, 29 buildings, 6 large tent platforms with tents, 9 covered outdoor areas (small group gazebos, car ports, or pole barns), 4 small storage sheds, multiple concrete sidewalks, 5 foot bridges, about a mile of private gravel roads, 4 forested hiking trails totaling about 3 miles length, private water/wastewater systems that serve 19 building connections, and multiple outdoor recreation areas including a grass ball field, basketball court, sand volleyball court, archery range, paintball course, fishing pond, high and low ropes courses, disc golf course, and a small playground. The buildings and most improvements are on approximately 30 acres of the 480-acre property. The camp shop is equipped above average for camp facilities. The camp owns various equipment including a full size road grader, a skid loader (with forks, bucket, and backhoe attachments), 2 pickup trucks, 2 ATVs, 3 backup generators of various size (45kw, 12kw, 8kw), a Woodmizer Sawmill, a 2017 Kawasaki Mule, and various other smaller equipment.
If this list seems like a lot, it’s because it is! And all of it needs to be kept in working order to ensure a great experience for all of the guests that come on the property. And this falls squarely to the Facilities Manager which the camp is in need of currently. “I believe in putting the right people in the right places, give them the right tools and get out of their way,” says Nate.
The camp seeks a full-time Facilities Director who will oversee the operation and maintenance of all facilities and property. This person will over see 1-2 assistants as well as additional summer staff who will assist in the day to day maintenance on grounds and housekeeping. This person also oversees any contractors used on site and long-term projects.
The right candidate will have a lover of ministry, the church, and see the value in camping. They will also have experiences in facility management and maintenance. They must be a self-starter and self-manager of time and resources.
It takes a unique mindset to live in such a remote place which can feel isolated 9 months out of the year, and yet intensely people-oriented through the summer with groups every week. But the beautiful surroundings, the forest and the climate makes for an ideal work setting for the right person.
While the job covers a lot of different areas, the following are prioritized in order for skill and competence:
- General Maintenance (cabin and equipment)
- Outdoor Maintenance (grounds and forestry)
- Project Management
- People Skills
- New Construction
And whatever this person does not know how to do…they will look to YouTube to learn!
