If you’ve never been to downtown Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Cathedral District, you’ve got to check out First United Methodist Church! The sanctuary is spectacular and the people are tremendously caring. They’re looking for a Children’s Pastor/Director who can appreciate an ancient-future approach to ministry, while reaching today’s kids and families in compelling ways.
First United Methodist Church-Tulsa has been used by God in mighty ways for 134 years. A powerful anointing and healing movement of the Holy Spirit in the 1960s was followed by 18 years of adventure and growth. Its next chapter focused on helping people “believe, belong, and become” under the dynamic leadership and preaching of Dr. James Buskirk. Then came an era of helping to revitalize the city’s downtown and surrounding neighborhoods. In 2016, God reunited First United Methodist Church-Tulsa with its former Executive Pastor of 12 years, Rev. Jessica Moffat. With nearly 15 years experience as a Senior Pastor, Jessica has served the past five years as the first female Lead Pastor in a church she was introduced to at a revival meeting as a kid.
Today, First United Methodist Church-Tulsa has two weekend services that average 750 participants. A highlight of 2020 was the addition of award-winning singer and songwriter Nichole Nordeman as a Worship Arts Minister. Holding onsite and online services has helped maximize the church’s impact, particularly during the recent pandemic. Along with its neighborhood ministries, the church has an on-campus Youth and Family Complex that’s known as a premier fitness facility in downtown Tulsa.
The Children’s Pastor/Director opportunity at First United Methodist Church-Tulsa is primed for life changing impact. A growing number of families call Tulsa home, but weekly church engagement isn’t on their radar. The church has a spacious children’s ministry facility. Still, despite strategic efforts, the church’s ability to reach and retain young families has waned the past 15 years. This has resulted in infants through fifth grade only making up 10% of total weekend attendance (~75 kids weekly). The Student Ministry is taking positive strides under the leadership of a new Director, and the prayer is that the same will happen in the Children’s Ministry.
The team that’s in place, including two part-time Children’s Ministry staff, are eager to be envisioned and equipped by a Children’s Pastor/Director that is called to take ground for Christ and the sake of children’s eternities in and around Tulsa. It’s time for kid-influencers at First United Methodist Church-Tulsa to rally together, develop innovative plans, try some new approaches, and partner with God in ministry each step of the way. The staff and congregation are poised to revitalize the children’s and family ministries in a way that serves parents with the Gospel in life giving ways.
