Vice President of Development
Awana is a $30 million worldwide nonprofit ministry focused on providing fully integrated Bible-based evangelism and discipleship solutions for ages 2-18. As the global leader in child and youth discipleship, Awana gives children the opportunity to know, love and serve Jesus, no matter their background. About 100 FT employees are housed in Awana’s headquarters in Streamwood, IL (near Chicago), in addition to 215 field staff across the world. Its mission is to equip leaders to reach kids with the gospel and engage them in lifelong discipleship.
Founded in 1941, Awana now each week has more than 4.5 million children and 470,000 volunteers who gather in 47,000 churches around the world to hear the gospel and be launched into lifelong discipleship. Offered through local churches, Awana reaches kids where they are and walks alongside them in their faith journey.
Reporting directly to the COO, the successful Vice President of Development will be an experienced practitioner in the ministry of donor development, able to lead existing teams and legacy to new levels of success while establishing a donor-focused culture across the entire organization. This person will grasp both the “art” and “science” of donor development and merge this technical aptitude with the culture of Awana to build a future together. A patient leader, this person will inherit a passion for legacy and great people along with systemic challenges that need to be built and developed.
S/he serves as a key leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting Awana. Responsible for fundraising and development activities, this person will design and implement a comprehensive plan for developing key external alliances by cultivating individual and philanthropic support in keeping with Awana’s mission, vision, values and brand.
This team leader will have the primary responsibility for establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to grow a donor budget through the solicitation of major gifts, grants, special events, and corporate and foundation support. S/he leads a department currently consisting of a Major Gifts/Foundation Leader, two full-time and one part-time Major Gifts Officers, Grants Manager, Director of Donor Systems, Development Coordinator (Data/Reporting/Serving MGOs), and a part-time Global Advocate. It is expected that funds raised by Awana will increase in future years as the VP of Development systematically and effectively strengthens the organization’s overall fundraising capacity.
