African Leadership And Reconciliation Ministries (ALARM) is looking for a new Senior Director of Development to lead their ongoing development and future growth. Currently working in eight countries, its mission is to develop servant leaders in the African Church and community who reconcile and transform lives affected by conflict and injustice. They train and equip African leaders, providing them with the tools, knowledge and skills needed to rewrite the stories of African families, communities, and nations.
ALARM was founded in 1994 at the end of the Rwandan genocide. In the space of 100 days, the Hutu militias there butchered anywhere from 500,000 to 1 million people. Since many Rwandan families had intermarried (tribally), fathers, brothers, and neighbors ended up slaughtering fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, and neighbors. Amid the genocide, 70% of Rwanda’s pastors—some of whom hid Tutsis in their homes or harbored them in their sanctuaries—were killed. As founder Celestin Musekura visited the refugee camps in Congo searching for his family, he found a corner of hell on earth—because of the trauma and torment so visible among the survivors.
Musekura and other ministers began working with pastors in the refugee camps, helping them to begin healing from the trauma of seeing friends and family murdered. Their work expanded over time to teach church leaders to be servant leaders and how to teach (and live out) a biblical theology. Over the years, the ministry has also expanded to other nations in East and Central Africa—South Sudan, Sudan, Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Uganda, and Tanzania.
ALARM’s US headquarters is in Dallas, TX. Their operating budget in 2017 was $3.14 million. Under the authority of a 5–person board of directors, they are led by Founder, President & CEO Celestin Musekura, and have a staff of six full-time and four part-time in Dallas, as well as 55+ in eight countries in East and Central Africa. Just over half of their revenue comes from churches, with the remainder fairly evenly split between foundations and individual donations.
The Senior Director of Development is a key member of the ALARM team and serves as the person responsible for many of the strategic development initiatives of the ministry, including monthly donors, foundations and grants, gift and estate planning, and a portfolio of major donor relationships. The essence of this position is the responsibility to care for and grow the existing donor base in order to secure sufficient funds to meet the annual operating budget, generate additional funds for growth and, as needed, secure funding for capital campaigns and initiatives.
This position needs to very familiar with the monthly, mid-level and major donors and foundations that support ALARM. The director will regularly coordinate and interact with the President & CEO to ensure good overall communication and teamwork. The organization seeks to maintain and grow a corporate culture where everyone participates in development.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $ 70,000-$80,000
