If you’re like me, you spend an increasing percentage of your time in front of a screen. Sometimes we sit in rows – like at church, a sporting event, a concert or a play. I believe that only so much personal transformation takes place in front of a screen or sitting in a row. I fully endorse the belief of my church, Soul City in Chicago, where we say that maximum transformation takes place in circles, not in rows.
So what can happen in a circle?
- The Wonder of Being Seen. When we sit in a circle, we make eye contact with the others in our little group. All of us long to truly be seen, to be known and valued. A network of relationships can be formed in a circle– a bond that reminds us we are not alone.
- The Wonder of Being Heard. The greatest gift we can give another human being is to listen. In a circle, we take turns opening up our lives, sharing our stories, building connections. We discover that other people “get us,” that they may have walked a similar road. Together we learn from one another’s experiences, from our mistakes and victories.
- The Wonder of Long-Term Friendships. Whatever circle you join, you likely won’t have equal chemistry with everyone in the group. But it’s highly probable that you will forge a connection with one, two, or three other leaders who will walk with you in life’s many seasons, supporting you during every high and low. My greatest joy with Coaching Circles is watching these friendships form and seeing how so many of them stay committed to one another. What a gift to have another leader from another church who is a safe place for you!
- The Wonder of “Aha” Moments and Life Change. Every circle I’ve led has some remarkable moments when someone takes a risk to challenge and stretch another leader, calling them to the next level of growth. Sometimes this happens during our “teaching/content” sessions. Even more often. it happens as we linger over a dinner, or meet up for breakfast. We help each other to love our work more and more, to practice tools for leading up, and leading our teams with greater effectiveness.
I urge you to join us for one of our 2018 Coaching Circles if you long to be seen, heard, and transformed. These circles are intentionally limited to 12 or less people so that we can forge the kind of bonds possible with a more intimate group. This year we are offering two different Circles for women and worship arts leaders. Please consider applying today, or let us know if you have any questions!
