Chief Development Officer
Steiger International’s story began in 1983 in Amsterdam at the height of the European punk rock movement. There, David and Jodi Pierce began a Bible study on a barge known as Steiger 14 (meaning “pier” in Dutch) behind the Central Train Station and began reaching the city’s punks and anarchists. Shortly thereafter, David started a band called No Longer Music (NLM) as a tool to communicate the Gospel of Jesus to these young people who would never step foot in a church.
Today, Steiger has 11 City Teams, 81 missionaries, 160 team members, over 350 volunteers and a great variety of ministries effectively reaching the Global Youth Culture in more than twenty countries around world, including Poland, Hungary, Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Columbia, Brazil and Lebanon.
Each Steiger City Team:
- Develops a “seeking God” culture (through prayer, Bible study, worship and bold faith);
- Establishes a regular, relational presence in the secular scene of its city;
- Engages in weekly, creative evangelism;
- Creates spaces that foster discipleship (community houses, open houses, weekly informal Bible studies);
- Hosts an annual, large-scale, evangelistic endeavor (online campaign, evangelistic concert, interactive art exhibit, mission trip, etc.);
- Offers at least one annual mission training event (Steiger seminar, Compact School or conference);
- Establishes a network of church and ministry partnerships throughout the city; and
- Invests continually in new leaders to plant new City Teams.
Headquartered just outside Minneapolis, their budget for FY2019 is just over $3 million, mostly funded by individual donors. Individual churches support many of their missionaries and, in their six world regions, their leaders raise their own support locally with the full support of the organization.
The Chief Development Officer (CDO) has primary responsibility for raising the ministry budget of Steiger through managing an integrated fundraising strategy. This will be accomplished by (1) cultivating current and new relationships with major donors, (2) developing and executing an integrated strategy for raising ministry funds, (3) building, and providing leadership for, a development team that will support this strategy, and (4) engaging internal and external partners to assist in raising funds. In addition, the CDO will ensure that all fund-raising activities are ethical, legal, biblical and consistent with Steiger’s values, beliefs and policies. Although relocation to the Twin Cities is preferred, this position may also work remotely.
The ideal candidate for this role will be a gifted and proven fundraiser who is passionate and committed to seeing the mission of Steiger accomplished. Someone who has no problem doing the hard work of cultivating donor relationships and making appropriate asks. Someone who builds trust and credibility; who is driven and determined. A great communicator with strong relational and emotional intelligence. S/he must be able to bring two worlds together—the traditional donor world and the Steiger missions/Global Youth Culture world, having an understanding of and passion for both. A creative storyteller who can paint a picture; someone who is not polished, but authentically passionate; who thrives in an intense, fast-moving environment; who is willing to roll up their sleeves and push into new territory, and who has a bit of a “rock and roll” edge. Ultimately, s/he must believe that reaching the GYC is worth giving their life to.
