Ensuring that the Church THRIVES well into the 21st century means paying attention to and coaching the future generation with whatever wisdom and knowledge God has given us. Sometimes the best way to coach is by relating our own experiences. It is with this spirit, I submit to you “what I wish I knew when I was 21.”

When I was 21:

I wish I’d understood the value of lasting through difficult situations.

I wish I’d understood Micah 6:8 - ”This is how to live life – Do Good, show mercy, be humble.”

I wish I’d understood the importance of having a curious, learning spirit.

I wish I’d understood the art and heart of listening.

I wish I’d understood how not to be “out of breath” How not to be so busy – to have headroom or bandwidth for the unexpected.

I wish I’d understood that talking with children is life giving.

I wish I’d understood how to look at life “from the blimp” – “the big picture” - “the story.”

I wish I’d understood that what a person enjoyed as a 4th grader is what will bring them joy today.

I wish I’d understood how hurtful it is to be critical of others.

I wish I’d understood that questions are more important than answers.

Now that 21 is distant memory, had I realized these things then I would have not made some of the mistakes I made. I am so very thankful to have a deeper understanding of these things today. When I am 90 I will need to understand them even better. I want to be a life learner and I want to be easily impressed by wonderful, simple, beautiful things. This is the day the Lord gave us so lets be glad!

People 21 and over: What would you add to this list?

The rest of you: What are you currently learning right now?

1. He is extremely “welcoming” – There is NO question in anyone’s mind that Ryan Seacrest is glad to welcome his “congregation.”

2. He is a Hospitality Genius – The Biblical concept of hospitality is “lover of strangers.” He does that for sure.

3. He makes the audience comfortable at all times – Helping the audience to be comfortable is an art. It’s the absence of “awkward.”

4. He is extremely spontaneous – Or I should say he is extremely prepared. The most spontaneous people are the most prepared. Ryan Seacrest can handle any situation because he has great skill.

5. He never stumbles over words or thoughts – The audience never has to wait on him.

6. He eliminates the great divide between the stage and the audience – The entire auditorium becomes “ONE.”

7. He uses “storytelling” constantly – He uses behind-the-scenes stories to capture moments. Brilliant!

8. He understands the “customer” – He translates the immense skill and talent of each musician and technology artists into a language the audience can understand, even if they’re not trained musicians themselves.

9. He is a genius at transitioning – He becomes a tour guide expert. He skillfully leads from one moment to the next.

10. He smiles a lot – This makes the congregation glad to be with him. It is contagious.

11. He is great at “anticipating what’s going to happen next. He’s got great “game sense.”

12. He shows emotion and genuine concern for everyone in the audience- those on stage and those behind the scenes.

13. He actually portrays genuine humility.

14. He is always encouraging.

15. He shows empathy toward the discouraged or disappointed.

16. He seems to be more interested in others than himself.

17. He encourages the audience to both laugh and cry.

Ryan Seacrest is keenly aware of everyone involved in the American Idol experience. He has developed the skills necessary to make the whole experience extremely powerful for everyone involved. He leaves no one behind.

Do we?
